Featured Supervisor

Sherry Corollo
This month's featured SSA Supervisor is Sherry Corollo!

Sherry Corollo grew up in Colorado and started working at Woolworths at the age of 15. She moved to California in 1974 and, in 1978, started working in Berkeley at College Ave Liquor and Deli.

Sherry came to West Contra Costa Unified School District in 1981. She started out as a yard supervisor at Castro Elementary and, then, someone told her about food service. She applied for food service in 1983 and was a substitute school lunch worker for about six weeks at Richmond High. In 1984, she received a permanent position at Harry Ells High as a school lunch worker. She moved from Harry Ells High to Helms Middle School in 1985 due to the Harry Ells school closure. At Helms Middle School, she worked as a school lunch worker and a substitute cashier until 1998. In 1998, she obtained her current position, Cafeteria Manager, at Portola Middle School.

Sherry enjoys all that she does at work. Her favorite task is serving food to the students. She likes getting to know the students, as they come through the cafeteria everyday during their 6-8th grade years. She says, “In that short time, it's just amazing to watch how these kids grow and change.” She also gets a kick out of running into school alumni. She says, “When I'm out in public and I hear someone say ‘it's the lunch lady.’ I turn around and it's a grown person who remembers me from when they went to school. That warms my heart.”

In terms of being a supervisor, Sherry loves interacting with her staff and team building. Sherry is challenged when training a new employee that is struggling. But she is well rewarded when the person pulls through and becomes a great employee. On-the-job training has been essential to her development. Working her way through various food service positions has given her the insight and means to be a productive supervisor.

In her free time, Sherry likes traveling, fishing, sewing, gardening, and working with ceramics. She also enjoys spending time with family and friends. Mrs. Corollo has two grown daughters, four grandchildren, and has been happily married for over 30 years.

Congratulations Sherry!
